Courage

The quick story

St. George came from Cappadocia and loved the Lord Jesus. When he learned that Christians were being forced to worship idols, he gave his wealth to people in need and freed the people he had held in slavery. His faith showed itself in generosity as well as courage.

George spoke openly against the persecution of Christians. The emperor offered him greater honours if he would abandon Christ, but George refused. The Coptic Synaxarium describes God strengthening him through suffering and others coming to faith through his witness. George eventually died as a martyr, and the Church honours him as Prince of Martyrs.

You may recognise George in pictures showing a dragon. The Southern Coptic Diocese explains that this represents evil being overcome through faith in Christ; the Synaxarium does not describe a battle with a real dragon. His story invites us to be generous, speak up for what is right, and ask God for courage.

PART 1

A generous heart

George came from Cappadocia. When Christians faced persecution, he gave his riches to people in need and freed those he had held in slavery.

PART 2

Standing firm

The emperor offered George greater honours if he would deny Christ. George refused. His courage came from faith, rather than a desire for power.

PART 3

Understanding the dragon

The Southern Diocese explains that the Synaxarium does not describe George fighting a real dragon. In his pictures, the dragon represents evil overcome through faith in Christ. The picture helps us remember a spiritual victory.

PART 4

Remembered by the Church

The Coptic Church commemorates George’s martyrdom on Baramouda 23. His body was taken to Lydda, where a church was built in his honour.
