A heart full of prayer
The quick story
St. Mary is the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Church calls her the Mother of God because Jesus is truly God. She spent years in the Temple and lived a life close to God.
Later, St. John cared for her, just as Jesus had asked. The Coptic Synaxarium tells us that she prayed and that Jesus came to comfort her when her earthly life was ending. The Church also celebrates God taking her holy body to heaven. We honour St. Mary and ask for her prayers.

PART 1
A little girl dedicated to God
Mary's parents were Joachim and Anna. They had longed for a child, and Anna prayed, promising to dedicate her child to God. When Mary was three, her parents brought her to the Temple in Jerusalem.
The Coptic Synaxarium remembers her growing up there among the virgins. Her story began with a family's prayer and a young girl's life devoted to God.
PART 2
Wonderful news from an angel
In Nazareth, the angel Gabriel brought Mary an amazing message: she would give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. Mary asked how this could happen. Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her.
Mary trusted God's message and accepted His will. The Church calls this event the Annunciation, which means the announcement of good news.
PART 3
The mother of our Lord
Jesus, the eternal Son of God, became truly human through St. Mary. That is why we call her the Mother of God. This title tells us who her Son is; it does not mean that Mary existed before God.
When we remember her loving acceptance of God's message, we can practise listening to God and answering Him with trust.
PART 4
Loved and remembered by the Church
Later in her life, St. John cared for Mary as Jesus had asked. The Coptic account describes her praying near the Lord's tomb. When her earthly life ended, Jesus comforted her, and the disciples honoured her.
The Church celebrates her holy body's assumption into heaven. We continue to honour her and ask her to pray for us.
